Studio Art

This series was born of curiosity. I was interested to see how the watercolor would react on photo-paper as opposed to the watercolor paper. I began to experiment with different substrates as a way to mold and bend the water based paints with alcohol based ones that I would make myself. These reactions became the perfect base for a series on something just as strange: Aliens!

Through this experimentation I pulled a strong influence from Ken Russell’s, Altered States. The driving question then evolved, how many states of transformation and nature inspired creatures could I create? This once simply Alien based project now an exploration of the cosmos personified.

This series speaks to the ever-present weight and force of the world women grapple with. While these forces are violent with their grip, these women adapt and resist the touch.

These three are apart of a larger series where I became interested in what anthropomorphic creatures said about the soul of a being. What stereotypes attached to these animals are applied to someone with their features? Are Lions really all brave, even in the face of death? Are butterflies always delicate, even when metamorphosing? Are deer really only vunerable? And when we compare people to these animals, what would that look like?
